DESCRIPTION:On the morning of All Saints’ Day in 1755\, a massive earthqu
 ake struck off the coast of Iberia and Morocco\, causing regional destruc
 tion and decimating Lisbon\, the capital city of the wealthy global Portu
 guese empire. Considered the world’s first global news event\, word quick
 ly spread\, horrifying Europeans and inspiring such works as Voltaire’s “
 Candide” and Telemann’s “Donner-Ode”. Terremoto! will tell the story of t
 he quake and its aftermath\, featuring readings from contemporaneous sour
 ces interspersed among music from 18th-century Portugal\, much of which h
 as never before been performed in the US. Music for orchestra\, choir\, a
 nd vocal soloists by Teixeira\, Almeida\, Scarlatti\, Rameau\, Telemann\,
  and more.
