DESCRIPTION:Henry VIII\, best known today as a fat despot with an unfortu
 nate marital history\, was as a young man educated to be the “Ideal Renai
 ssance Prince\,” capable of speaking several languages and playing many m
 usical instruments\, especially the recorders and the virginal. His daugh
 ter Elizabeth was also well trained in music and played the virginal with
  great ability. This program will be an hour exploring music from the cou
 rts of Henry VIII and Elizabeth. The ensemble Canzona—which performs on c
 opies of Renaissance-style recorders—will be joined by harpsichordist Chr
 istina Edelen from Amsterdam\, playing on a reproduction Renaissance virg
 inal. Gerald Self narrates the concert\, telling stories about life in th
 e English court and explaining the music and the instruments used.
