This special holiday concert of Early Music performed by San Antonio’s premier women’s ensemble has become a holiday favorite for many. Concert is typically sold out so purchase tickets early.

A program featuring recorder music from the 15th through the 18th centuries will be presented by Canzona, an ensemble of Renaissance recorders. Gerald Self will serve as host, narrating the program. The ensemble will play on a variety of historically based recorders, ranging from the soprano to the great bass.

The San Antonio Museum of Art hosts Copperleaf in this concert of Early Music.

It’s still summer vacation time in Texas, but make your plans now to come to a workshop for recorders and strings in Austin to start off the new school year right. If you’re coming from out of town, make it an early music weekend and stay for the La Follia Austin Baroque concert the same evening, at First English Lutheran!

Copperleaf sings a concert of Early Music to open Our Lady of Atonement’s 2010-2011 Music Series. Program features music of Byrd, Tallis and Lassus.

Henry VIII, best known today as a fat despot with an unfortunate marital history, was as a young man educated to be the “Ideal Renaissance Prince,” capable of speaking several languages and playing many musical instruments, especially the recorders and the virginal. His daughter Elizabeth was also well trained in music and played the virginal with great ability. This program will be an hour exploring music from the courts of Henry VIII and Elizabeth. The ensemble Canzona—which performs on copies of Renaissance-style recorders—will be joined by harpsichordist Christina Edelen from Amsterdam, playing on a reproduction Renaissance virginal. Gerald Self narrates the concert, telling stories about life in the English court and explaining the music and the instruments used.

Benissimo Music Productions introduces this vibrant vocal quintet in a concert of Early Music. Quintet members Ruth Moreland (Artistic Director), Amy Phipps, Laura Grindle, Andrew DeVoogd, and Steve Wegner will present a program featuring Francisco Guerrero’s “Missa de la Batalla Escoutez,” “Cantiones Sacrae Quinis Vocibus” by Peter Philips, and Sweelinck’s “Gaudete Omnes.” Cocktail Reception at 5:30, Concert at 7:00 p.m.

La Follia celebrates the 300th anniversary of the birth of Giovanni Pergolesi with a fully staged production of the comic operetta La Serva Padrona. A pre-concert lecture on Pergolesi will be given by Dr. Guido Olivieri of the University of Texas 20 minut
