SING WE NOEL!: MUSIC OF CHRISTMAS
In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the ensemble’s popular holiday concert, past and current members of Voci will perform Medieval and Renaissance Music of Christmas and a collection of well-loved carols from around the globe.

Joseph Causby, organist/music director of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and Robert Brewer, organist/music director of St. David’s Episcopal Church will perform on two Gerald Self harpsichords. Tenor Leo Garcia will perform three songs by Henry Purcell, accompanied by harpsichord and viola da gamba. Causby and Brewer will speak about the instruments will perform the Bach Concerto for Two Harpsichords in C Major.

Spain’s colonies in the New World produced music just as ornate, complex, and beautiful as anything found in the mother country, and this music is only recently being rediscovered.

This concert presents music of 17th-century Latin America. Works by Zipoli, Padilla, Herrando, Billoni, and Ignacio de Jerúsalem’s rarely performed Matins for the Virgin of Guadalupe.

The music produced in Spain’s colonies in the New World was just as ornate, complex, and beautiful as anything found in the mother country, and this music is only recently being rediscovered. Join us as we explore the sacred music of Mexico, Bolivia, and Peru, including Ignacio de Jerúsalem’s rarely performed Matins for the Virgin of Guadalupe, music by Zipoli, Padilla, and more.

CHAPEL OF THE INCARNATE WORD MUSIC SERIES: Lily of Heaven

As this year’s Artists-in-Residence, the Copperleaf Quintet is presenting five concerts for the Chapel’s music series. The concerts feature Renaissance vocal chamber music and center around seasonal themes as they relate to the Chapel’s liturgical calendar.

La Follia performs the peerless music of Mozart and Haydn. Featured are Mozart’s Oboe Quartet and Flute Concerto in D major, and Haydn’s Harpsichord and Violin Concerto and Baryton trio 118. Stephen Redfield, Karen Clarke, James Brown, Billy Traylor, and Marcus McGuff guest star.

While it is common to hear music of Mozart and Haydn performed, it is rare to hear it performed with instruments like they used, and at the pitch that they used. For example, most of us do not think of Haydn writing for the harpsichord, much less writing a double concerto for harpsichord and violin. And yet, indeed he did, and splendid music it is too. Come hear these classics performed as the masters themselves heard them.

The acclaimed London-based Fretwork presents a program of music for viol ensemble and lute by John Dowland, including his famous Lachrymae, in honor of the 450th anniversary of the birth of this eminent British composer.

Mozart Requiem, debut concert of a newly formed professional ensemble committed to performing the greatest art at the highest standards.

Settecento returns to its origins as a chamber ensemble, presenting French chamber music from the time of the founding of New Orleans. Experience what an aristocratic, mid-eighteenth century musical soirée in the Crescent City might’ve been like, with works from Couperin, Boismortier, Corrette, Clérambault, and more.

Running from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., a fundraiser for the group, with Goodwill Industries and Christ Lutheran Church of Alamo Heights. Bring your Goodwill donations the parking lot and enjoy concerts and recitals inside the church:

A concert of contemplative music honoring the legacy of service extended to all by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. The program features music from Lassus, Palestrina, and Guerrero.

Bach on period instruments that include recorder, traverso, harpsichord, theorbo, viola da gamba, Baroque cello, and Baroque guitar.

“AGNUS DEI” Copperleaf sings Early music celebrating the season of Easter. Program includes music of Lassus, Lobo, and features villanescas by Francisco Guerrero.

A program of stirring, dramatic music in anticipation of Holy Week, including Georg Böhm’s rarely performed Passion According to St. John, once attributed to Handel. Like J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion, Böhm’s work musically depicts the Good Friday story as it is written in the Gospel of John. Also on the program are a chorus form Handel’s final oratorio “Jephtha,” excerpts from J.S. Bach’s contemplative funeral cantata “Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit” and Haydn’s fiery Symphony no. 49 in F minor, “La passione” – possibly the first performance of a complete Haydn symphony on period instruments in Central Texas.

The Harpsichord – A Fresh Voice from the Past
Dr. Ruth Holmes guides this educational journey through the history of the harpsichord from its earliest days to its revival in the 20th century. Discover how the early harpsichord developed, how it lost favor to the pianoforte, and how a new generation of musicians rediscovered its grace and charm in the 20th century.
This is a ‘must-experience’ program for musicians, teachers, students, and early music enthusiasts alike. Dr. Holmes’s use of historic musical examples makes the journey educational and entertaining for all.
