For All the Saints, our annual performance of Latin American music, will feature music for the feasts and holidays of the liturgical year. With music for Mass, Matins, and Vespers for major feasts like Christmas, Corpus Christi, and the Assumption, as well as minor feasts like St. Joseph’s Day and regional celebrations such as St. Ildephonsus’ Day and the Solemnity of Our Lady of Guadalupe, this program will be a fiesta of musical beauty! This is always our most popular show of the season, and this year’s concert will feature three pieces that have not been performed since they were written! Music by Salazar, Jerúsalem, Tollis de la Rocca, Sumaya, Salas, Nebra, and more.

Designed in the same mode as TEMP’s educational outreach program to Austin-area schools, our concert presentation re-imagines the songs from this enduring and beautiful vocal literature in the style of a soap opera with international heritage.
Featuring such hits as “Caro mio ben”, “Per la Gloria”, “Che fiero costume”, and more, six of TEMP’s virtuosic soloists, assisted by a small continuo group and orchestra, spin a classic soap opera yarn (you know: totally believable!) using these very well-known “hits” from 17th and 18th century Italian opera and chamber music.
Highly presentational, unapologetically virtuosic, and entirely entertaining, this is a performance of timeless drama and very timely comedy! Love! Passion! High notes!

ABO presents “Known Unknowns” – little-known music by well-known baroque composers. Works by Pachelbel (*not* the Canon in D!), Rameau, Vivaldi, and JS Bach, and featuring the Texas premiere of Telemann’s oratorio “Der Tag des Gerichts” (“The Day of Judgment”), commemorating the 250th anniversary of the composer’s death.

“Paris City Limits, Part Deux” – Lively instrumental dances by Attaignant, Breton folk music, and chansons dealing with scenes of daily life: lovesickness, marital arguments, romantic friskiness, and more. TEMP’s 20-voice chorus will perform Janequin’s spectacular musical chanson about the birds (Le chant des oyseaux), as well as his even more stunning depiction of a battle (La Guerre) complete with trumpet calls, cannon fire and the cries of “Victoire!” Mary Springfels (viola da gamba), Peter Maund (percussion), countertenor Ryland Angel (New York) and mezzo Erin Calata (Seattle) join TEMP’s regular choir and orchestra as TEMP explores the rustic and sophisticated sides of Parisian and country life in the 16th and 17th centuries. Venez, y’all!

San Antonio’s new Baroque Orchestra performs concerti by Vivaldi, Torelli and Handel

Monteverdi Vespers of 1610, and it’s just in time to celebrate his 450th birthday–May 9, 1567.
Claudio Monteverdi was a major power in the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque, and his Vespers of 1610 includes elements of both musical eras. The Vespers is a powerhouse of widely diverse styles from beginning to end, ranging from virtuosic solos and duets to exuberant double-choir pieces in a glorious fusion of late Renaissance and early Baroque styles.

The 27-voice chorus includes guest soloists tenor Ryland Angel, bass Peter Walker, and tenor Temmo Korisheli. The rest of the many soloists are part of TEMP’s core singers, including Gitanjali Mathur, Jenifer Thyssen, Cayla Cardiff, Brett Barnes, and more.

The expanded early Baroque orchestra includes 3 cornetti, 3 early trombones, bowed strings, and an amazing continuo section of 3 theorbos, harp, portative organ, and harpsichord.

Included on the program will be Haydn’s Symphony no. 6 “Le matin,” Jean-Fery Rebel’s “Les Elemens,” and arias from Handel’s “Scipione” and Rameau’s “Platée.” We’ll close with Bach’s monumental Brandenburg Concerto no. 1, complete with three oboes, two raucous horns, and the rarely-heard violino piccolo.

Musica Sacra San Antonio, under the direction of Owen Duggan, will perform CPE Bach’s choral-orchestral masterwork, Magnificat with guest soloists and members of the University Chorus of Our Lady of the Lake University. Soloists include Angela Malek, soprano; Crystal Jarrell, alto and Carr Hornbuckle, tenor. In the manner of his father JS Bach’s Magnificat, passions and Mass in B minor, CPE’s work is a grand, exhilarating gesture of choral polyphony, rarely performed due to the extreme virtuosity required of the orchestra, choir and soloists. Known as the ‘Hamburg Bach,’ CPE (Emanuel Bach) renders exquisite, cantabile phrases believed to have inspired Mozart, who in turn described him as “the father of us all.” The program will also include Gabriel Faurė’s sublime Cantique de Jean Racine and the “Agnus Dei” and “Dona nobis pacem” from JS Bach’s Mass in B minor.

From meditative chant to rousing polyphony, TEMP explores the groundbreaking music of Leonin and Perotin of the 12th-century School of Notre-Dame, whose musical innovations are the foundation for almost all the music we enjoy today in the Western world. TEMP is proud to collaborate with Dr. Rebecca Baltzer, recognized worldwide as an expert on the music of Notre-Dame Cathedral during the Middle Ages.

Though solemn, a sense of joy and celebration permeate this music, echoing the ecstasy of the Marian movement during the 12th and 13th centuries. Rhythmically complex polyphonic pieces known as organum act as a wonderful complement to the dance-like conductus and the even older plainchant. We also include a few works that reveal the lighter sides of the lives of the monks with semi-secular works featuring vielle player, Mary Springfels, and harpist, Therese Honey. Guest artists Temmo Korisheli (California) and Ryland Angel (New York) join some of Austin’s best singers, including Jeffrey Jones Ragona, Steve Olivares, David Lopez, Tim O’Brien, and others.
