On the morning of All Saints’ Day in 1755, a massive earthquake struck off the coast of Iberia and Morocco, causing regional destruction and decimating Lisbon, the capital city of the wealthy global Portuguese empire. Considered the world’s first global news event, word quickly spread, horrifying Europeans and inspiring such works as Voltaire’s “Candide” and Telemann’s “Donner-Ode”. Terremoto! will tell the story of the quake and its aftermath, featuring readings from contemporaneous sources interspersed among music from 18th-century Portugal, much of which has never before been performed in the US. Music for orchestra, choir, and vocal soloists by Teixeira, Almeida, Scarlatti, Rameau, Telemann, and more.

Music from St. Mark’s presents Ars Lyrica Houston on Sunday, January 14 at 4:00 pm. Their program is entitled “Fugal Games” – a quintessentially Baroque afternoon featuring works by G.P. Telemann, excerpts from J.S. Bach’s “Art of the Fugue,” and chamber pieces from “Musical Offering.” Featuring Matthew Dirst, harpsichord; Elizabeth Blumenstock, Baroque violin and viola; Stephen Redfield, Baroque violin; Sydney ZumMallen, Baroque cello; and Colin St-Martin, traverso.

The San Antonio Chamber Music Society presents the dynamic duo of Brandon Patrick George, leading flute Virtuoso, and Mahan Esfahani, harpsichordist extraordinaire, in a concert featuring the exquisite music of J.S. and C.P.E. Bach. Details at www.SACMS.org

Serenissima will be an extravaganza of music from and inspired by 17th-century Venice. Known as “La Serenissima,” the Queen of the Adriatic was a one of the wealthiest cities in Europe, and people from across the continent flocked to her canals and back-alleys for her famous Carnival season. During this anything-goes time, drinking and debauchery abounded, and opera came to take center stage, putting Venetian republican ideals and social mores on display for all to see. After their misbehavior, revelers could atone for their indiscretions while basking in the splendor of the music of St. Mark’s Cathedral, whose staff musicians included luminaries like Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli, and even Claudio Monteverdi himself. We’ll perform a selection of chamber, sacred, and operatic music from Venice, featuring five vocal soloists accompanied by an intimate instrumental ensemble. Music by Monteverdi, Cavalli, Biber, and more.
